W Homework:
Most assignments are completed in class; however, there are occasionally assignments that will require work to be completed at home. We expect all homework to be completed; however, if your child is unable to complete any assignments for some reason, they will be expected to complete them the following evening. We will write a note in the planner to inform you of any missed or outstanding assignments. We also encourage you to help your child find a private and quiet place that is free of distractions for them to complete their homework. Places away from televisions and other siblings tend to work best. If assignments are missed more than once, a letter will be sent home to parents to advise them of the missing assignment with a plan to complete the assignment.
Planners:
We expect all students to fill out their planners each day. This is where they will record homework, upcoming tests, important dates, etc. We will sign their planner at the end of the day for the month of September. Please check and initial your child’s planner each night to ensure homework is completed as well as to check for any notes from us. Students will tuck any notices in the front pocket of their planner. We encourage you to use your child’s planner to communicate information to us as well. October and onward, students will be responsible for filling in their planners and they will no longer be checked by the teacher as long as they can continue to demonstrate responsibility in filling in their planners and completing and handing in assignments on time.
Social Expectations:
We spend a lot of time with our students working on achieving a positive sense of self. Much of the focus will be around treating themselves and others with respect. We have high expectations for them and we hope they will of themselves as well. We will do what we can to support your child to make wise and responsible choices while at school. We will do our best to communicate with you should any major problems arise while at school. If you are noticing a problem that is happening at school, in the classroom or on the playground that is not being addressed at school, please inform us and we will do our best to help sort out these issues with your child.
Absences/Lates:
While we expect all children to attend school on time each day, we recognize that occasional lates or absences are unavoidable. Please ensure you phone the office if your child is going to be absent from school. Your child will be responsible to make up any missed work while absent from school.
Math:
· Multiplication and Division: All students are expected to be able to recall their multiplication facts to 100 (and conversely their division facts as well). We will be helping them each week throughout the year to practice their facts; however, some facts will require more practice than others. We have found that students who practice each week at home tend to have more success in being able to recall their facts. There are many ways to practice their facts. For example, play Multiplication “War,” quiz using flashcards, play online multiplication games (ex. www.Multiplication.com), etc. You can also visit the "links" page of our website for more math websites.

Reading:
· Home Reading: Students are expected to read at home for at least 20 minutes every day! We encourage you to find a way to incorporate this into your daily routine in a way that is habitual and free of distractions (Ex. Read in bed 20 minutes before bedtime).
